The London New Zealand Cricket Club was founded by Trevor Campbell at New Zealand House in London during 1951 with the objective of ‘providing the opportunity for its members to play and enjoy cricket in the home of the game and to meet socially’. Many Willows members, including Club President, Nick Davidson, have enjoyed the experience of playing for LNZ over the years and The Willows as a result has recognised Trevor Campbell by naming our pavilion at Loburn in his honour.
This season’s fixture against LNZ was an afternoon 40-over match preceded by a midday lunch. The Willows launched into a fine batting performance scoring 253 runs. James Richards led the way with an undefeated 79 and was well supported by Ben Williams 42 and English county representative Gareth Wade with 58.
Richard Maguire then ripped the top out of the LNZ batting with three quick wickets in a lively opening spell. The other bowlers — including Jacob Wolt, Chris Gibson, Stan Woolliscroft and James Richards — all chipped in with further handy wickets and LNZ were finally dismissed for 165. Willower Matt Hudson was the pick of the LNZ batting performance with a very stylish 59 not out. Together with G. Campbell he added a valuable 44 runs in a defiant 8th wicket stand.
