lost by 36 runs
Revenge is sweet and more so when it’s a long time coming! The Willows elected to insert the Craz due mainly to the Willows wicketkeeper Paul Rutledge preferring to “get it over with” in the field so he could at least stand up later in the day.
A fiery opening spell by John Blakely failed to break through the 127 run partnership by Danny Bulman and Mike Johnston, followed up by John Masefield running between wickets like the Craz mascot—a former fleet footed goat but now mounted in its glory as simply a goat head watching over proceedings from the Willows pavilion. The Craz scored 253/9 with wickets shared between Blakely, Troels Nielsen and Wayne Wilson.
The Willows began in a hurry but lost wickets regularly and only threatened the total when Nielsen (48) joined young John Blakely (71), the anchor of the innings. However, the target proved too much for the Willowers and the Craz were left to wallow in their glory with the crayfish making its first appearance at the Casino since 1996. Bob Masefield, the Craz captain, was last seen trying to hawk the mounted crayfish trophy to help offset substantial peninsula losses at the tables.
