The Willows
lost by 1 wicket

In the manner of the Crusaders Rugby team making their opposition wait on Jade Stadium, the Craz led by the ageless Bob Masefield, finally arrived at the ground bearing battle scars from dragging Peninsula rams to present their wares at the A and P Show, where many of the Craz feature with Blue Ribbons for their stock, not their cricket feats!

The Willows batted first on a patchy wicket with, Troels Nielsen and Peter Wood compiling 50 runs before the fragile middle order was exposed to young Chris Snowden (3/10). Colin Hight retrieved the situation a little with a well struck 26 not out at the end, but sadly The Willows could only muster 159/9 which gave the visitors a scent of victory.

The Willows made inroads quickly with Sam Davis (3/30) and Jacob Wolt proving difficult for the batsmen to master. Andrew Nuttall typically put the brakes on further with a miserly spell of10 overs (2/14) and the fieldsmen began circling the Craz like a couple of Heading dogs. Two brilliant catches from Joe Bennett and Andrew Nuttall grasping one in the crook of his hand before it was down to the last pair at the crease and 9 runs to get. Edges, pushes, prods, appeals and one lusty cover drive (the only shot he remembers) from the Masefield Man, in desperation, and the Craz had laid the bogey to rest with a well earned, hard fought victory. Chris Snowden held the innings (and his skipper) together with a well controlled 68 not out, the only player to score over 30 on the day.

By the end of the match the Craz goat head mascot was beginning to signal his presence and Mark Hutchinson was given the honour, once more, to escort him home to the outer reaches of Banks Peninsula for another year, but this time with a wry smile on his bedraggled face!
