This match proved to be a classic encounter with both sides brimming with confidence and a strong desire to win. A fine day, two centuries, and over 550 runs were to provide the foundation of a match that would see numerous momentum wings throughout the day.
The Willows, who elected to bat first, were treated to an opening stand of 148 as Oliver Hutton and Sam Noster played elegantly through both sides of the wicket. Hutton’s 100 not out was chanceless and Noster (just 16 years old from CBHS) stroked majestically for his 57 off just 64 balls.
Despite Ben Harris pulling a hamstring (the players are still trying to work out which leg it was), batting at number three, he showed all of his first class experience by notching up 56 off just 51 balls, As a result1 The Willows raced to 165 off just 30 overs.
Southland Boys’ then worked hard to fight back and all bowlers managed to create some pressure, which resulted in a reduced run rate and the consequential fall of wickets. The Willows final 20 overs returned just 110 runs. However, the final 10 overs proved pivotal to the outcome of the match. Southland Boys’ managed to secure 5 wickets for just 46 runs.
A total in excess of son should have been obtained, however tight bowling from M. Beer (2/33 off to overs), and M McClean restricted The Willows to a total of 276.
A daunting total to chase, Southland Boys’ were under instruction to bat out the 50 overs. After an initial setback, partnerships of substance were developed throughout the innings, stemming mostly from the impressive batting of Tim McClean (twin brother of Mike).
McClean displayed a tremendous maturity and determination to hat through the innings, playing aggressively on both sides of the wicket. His 102 retired included 19 boundaries and was scored off just 84 balls. Understood to be his second century against The Willows, he is certainly a talent to watch for representative levels in the future.
McClean was also ably supported by S Fitzgibbon (21), H Skelt (32) and in the later stages van der Westhuizen (50 not out off 53 balls), displaying a good ability to find the gaps.
Southland Boys’ never panicked in the run chase and managed to avoid the infectious situation of losing wickets in clumps, a situation which often strikes visiting school teams. In a tight finish, Southland Boys’ hit the winning runs in the 49th over to secure a wonderful victory by five wickets.
While a good proportion of the team are currently in their first year at University in Otago, many of the side had played together for years through the Southland Boys’ High system. Their awareness and confidence in each others ability was a tremendous asset to the team and their desire to win ensured a deserved victory.
On behalf of The Willows, congratulations to Southland and their management for a deserved victory. The match was made all the more enjoyable because of the outstanding conditions of the wicket block, facilities and of course the company of the day.
