The match between the Dunedin Cavaliers and the Willows this season took on a distinctly regional appearance with a number of the Dunedin Cavaliers travelling from as far as lnvercargill to play in what turned out to be a match of the highest quality.

The Willows batted first on a typically good Willows wicket, with Tim Coop and Stephen Gibson adding 136 for the first wicket. Tim Coop was especially punishing on anything short in reaching 82 from 130 balls. He was ably supported by Stephen Gibson who made 72, in an impressive display. Unfortunately this excellent start could not be capitalised on, with only small partnerships to follow. The Willows got through to 234 for 7 from 50 overs. The turn around in fortunes was in no small part due to excellent fielding and accurate bowling from the young Dunedin Cavaliers. In particular the Dunedin wicket keeper impressed with his display standing up to the medium pace bowlers. He was very unlucky to receive a bad knock while ‘keeping, but courageously batted for Dunedin later in the innings. Bruce lrvine and Warren Alcock did an excellent job in keeping their young team focussed on the task.

Three run outs did not advance the Willows cause, something to do with advancing years and willing minds I believe. Nevertheless 234 was a defendable score , or so we thought. . .

An early wicket to the Willows provided early hope, however the veteran Alcock and the youngster Tim McCiean combined for a second wicket partnership of 90 which served to set the Cavaliers on course for victory. Alcock made a well complied 43, with McCiean making 100 in his first appearance at the Willows. His patient and skilful innings was instrumental in setting up the Dunedin victory. Whilst the Dunedin Cavaliers lost eight wickets in reaching the target of 235, the victory was comfortable enough. Troels Neilsen as always bowled with accuracy and was demanding of the batsmen in taking 2/21 from his eight avers. The young left arm spinner Michael Peacock impressed with his willingness to keep the ball !lighted, he showed much promise.

This Dunedin Cavaliers team proved to be one of the stronger sides they have fielded in recent years and the players who made the extra effort in terms of travel, I am sure will be putting their hands up for next years match. An excellent days cricket played in the right spirit.
