The Willows
lost by 1 wicket

The Willows team won the toss and elected to bat. Although the first over conceded eight runs, by the end of three overs the Willows were 8/3, with both of the St Andrews opening bowlers, D. King and T. Johnston, taking early wickets. The Willows then collapsed further to be 16/4. However, the St Andrew’s coach, Michael Johnston and Richard Reid, steadied the innings with a sixth wicket partnership of 62 runs. During the early stages of this partnership the St Andrew’s bowlers showed considerable pace and especially liked to show their coach their ability to get bounce off the pitch. After this steady partnership, the Willows again collapsed and were 105/9, with many overs left. However, M. Wright and D. McMillan combined for an invaluable tenth wicket partnership of 55 runs, to leave the Willows with a score of 1 60 to defend. Best scores for the Willows were R. Reid (48), D. McMillan (32) and M. Wright (27*). For St Andrew’s both the opening bowlers finished with two wickets D. King 2/26, T. Johnston 2/22 and young A. Duncan finished with 3/15.

C. Flanagan and D. McMillan opened the bowling for the Willows with a maiden over from each end. Then there was one early wicket, a small second wicket partnership and then St Andrew’s were 29/2. A solid third wicket partnership of 46 runs between M. Shaw (41) and D. James (27) took St Andrew’s to 75/3 and well on track for reaching their target. The Willows bowlers, lead by A. Nuttall and A. Mcleod (4/45), fought back and St Andrew’s went to 118/8 and 137/9, still 24 runs short of victory. However, excellent batting by D. James (35) and ably supported by R. McCone (9), saw St Andrew’s through to a well deserved victory with just three overs to spare. Thus of the 321 runs in the day, tenth wicket partnerships, with one unbroken, had contributed 79 runs!
