The Willows 190/8

The Willows
won by 2 wickets

The eagerly awaited clash with the Peninsula Craz turned into another nailbiting finish, the Willows reaching the target of 186 with one wicket in hand.

The Craz won the toss, elected to bat and were immediately on the back foot with a fiery opening spell by Sam Martin and Chris Sowden. John Masefield again showed his class with a well struck 36 before being induced into a false stroke by Troels Nielsen, the most miserly of bowlers (3/14 from ten overs). Josh Coll supported Troels with some tidy bowling and the Willows walked off satisfied with their bowling effort.

The Willows battled through with Sam Martin scoring 39 at the top of the order. The pressure was on throughout, until last man Andrew Nuttall joined Josh Coll, the young hero of the day, and together they guided their team to victory. Josh scored 60 runs with controlled aggression and organised defence, indicating a rosy future with bat and ball.

During the afternoon, the winner’s mounted Cray Trophy was pushed from one end of the pavilion to the other by the Craz Manager, Bob Masefield, as the game swung to and fro. Despite the narrow defeat, Bob was presented with a new trophy for the losing side which was accepted graciously.

"The Singing Crayfish” and the Craz lineup was last seen disappearing through the Casino doors to the tune of ‘Do Wa Diddy Diddy’ (sung by the crayfish). The trophy is not a sought after item, and the Willows have already stacked their side for next year to avoid the ignominy.
