The Willows
won by 3 wickets

As I watched heavy rain fall in Christchurch the night before, thoughts of a full day’s play were washing away. This became more evident the next morning as we travelled across the Waimakariri River. Water rushed under us as we crossed the bridge heading north towards the Willows. We arrived to a smiling Mike Dormer who greeted us with some good news. The newly purchased covers had done a fine job and the pitch had survived the overnight rain.

Wanganui Collegiate elected to bat first. This was pleasing as the pitch looked like assisting the bowlers early on. Collegiate had other ideas though as their opening pair fashioned an excellent first wicket stand of 98 runs. The introduction of lan Robertson was just what the Willowers were looking for. The young off spinner showed great flight and control through out his spell and looks a player of the future. Robertson captured 1 for 35 from 10 overs.

Runs continued to come but tight bowling meant that wickets would eventually fall. An excellent spell after lunch from Cleighten Cornelius held the visitors to 215 for 7. Cornelius captured 2 for 30 from 10 overs with good line and length bowling.

Chasing 216 for the win a good start was needed but disaster struck almost instantly with the loss ofGary Thomson. With the total at 3 for 1 stability was called for. Tim Coop (17) , Hamish Hudson (13) and Phi! Harris (17) steadied the ship.

Runs came steadily and after 2 7 overs the game was evenly poised at 94 for 3. With wickets and overs in hand, things were looking comfortable until Harris was unfortunately run out with 121 still required.

Lee Germon saw the Willows home with an unbeaten 69 to provide the home team with a well deserved win, without the loss of any further wickets.
