Swamped by the Swamphens – well, almost!

Four runs required, our last batsmen at the crease, last over in progress – Ken Baker pushes for one off the third ball, three runs required. The Willows flag fluttered nervously as did MED, wandering the boundary line. Would we retain our unbeaten record?

The Swamphens close in to prevent a single – a low full toss and a full blooded drive wide of mid-on for four by Stuart Stevens and the game is ours with two balls to spare.

Full marks, though, to the Swamphens who fielded like agitated gazelles all afternoon and combined in a chorus, between balls, of “Pressure, Pressure, Pressure", throughout our innings. Five down for 44 and a very sporting pitch, our prospects were not good. Ken Baker and Maurice Ryan joined forces to turn the tide and the chorus became an uninterrupted solo.

Willie Fairbairn (10 overs, 13 runs, 1 wicket) spearheaded our bowling attack; he was hindered by a mixture of dribbles from Fisher, Baker, Bromley and Mitchell! Three very good catches by John Mitchell assisted our cause.

An excellent day and the first occasion for me at The Willows – a grand concept, to mix the young, old and families in the best traditions of the game. Thanks Mike.
