First Captain’s Report:
Loyal Club members deserve some explanation for the humiliating debacle that somehow occurred on this fine December day. and I look forward to reading this in the report from the acting captain which follows this. Suffice to say that as captain of the side until my enforced departure from the ground at the tea break I seem to have done all that was necessary to ensure yet another stirring Willows victory.
It has been rather unkindly suggested that my contribution to the match was somewhat slim. True, I won the toss and wrote out what seemed to be a sensible batting order (Ikram 10, Bromley 11) but I didn’t get to bat and I fielded indifferently. But to the facts: batting first, a star studded Willows lineup, on paper anyway, produced 188 for six wickets in our allotted overs. Solid performances were turned in by Lancaster, Bull, Cowles and Dormer Jr. No one made fifty, but the total seemed defendable. This was confirmed when our opening bowlers, Lancaster and Innes Sr restricted Hawkswood to 29 runs in the 20 overs bowled before tea – for the loss of four wickets!
The game was clearly in the bag, and I packed mine and departed, confident that I would read in next morning’s paper of another great Willows victory. How could we lose from here?
Second Captain’s Report:
C.L.Bull, Esq., a Founding Member, and past captain of Canterbury assumed the role on R.C.Bromley’s departure as captain. The game’s progress took a dramatic turn, unplanned for by Bull, with a resulting loss – embarrassing both captains. C.L. Bull, Esq., through his embarrassment, has been unable to orchestrate pen to paper to complete this report.
