This fixture was the first time the Police had fielded a side atTheWillows. Unfortunately, their ranks were depleted with several of their regular players being unavailable.
We won the toss and batted on a flat, even-paced wicket, and reached 245 for 7 after our 50 overs. Two young players, Jarrod Ward from NorthCanterbury, who scored a solid 68 runs before being run out, and Christian Cunneen from St. Bede’s, who hit a well compiled 46 assisted in compiling a winning score.
The remaining bulk of the runs were scored by Andre Burrell with a belligerent 40 and Geoff Miller who still possesses the strokes and timing of old to reach 44 not out.
The Police innings got off to a disastrous start with both openers being bowled for ducks and at 4 for 25, the situation looked grim. However, an old clubmate from my playing days at Sydenham – one Dick Pettit, more recognised for his hockey involvement these days, arrived at wicket. He immediately proceeded to chip what can only be described as a “ goober” to yours truly, and I obliged by carpeting it. Fortunately, Dick’s stay wasn’t too long, as he hit a catch to the other Burrell playing, who held it.
The Police innings was held together by Brian Kench who smashed 62, including thirteen fours, and and an ‘under cover cop’ by the name of Darin Cusack, completed an elegant 50 before succumbing to the wiles of Mark Savill. Their batting operation ended 56 runs short of their target, and our bowling performances went toWade Cornelius with 2 for 6 off 6 overs; Carl Anderson 2 for 18 and a reluctantMark Savill with 3 for 23.
An enjoyable day was had by all and the Police are keen for a rematch next season with the promise of a full strength side.
