It was a very young, but nevertheless enthusiastic Waimea College side that arrived at The Willows for their fixture, with none of the boys having played here previously.
Waimea College won the toss, and asked The Willows to bat, on a typically evenly paced wicket. Two experienced Willowers in Dave Kelly and Adrian McFedries got us off to a good solid start, with Dave Kelly retiring on 54. Useful contributions from veterans Jonathan Davidson and Tim McConnell ensured a steady run rate. Then two young Willows players James Kelly (son of Dave) and Will Bretherton combined for a partnership of 76, with Will compiling a well struck 36. James Kelly showed a maturity beyond his years, and he finished on 49 not out — one short of what would have been a well-deserved half century. A late flurry allowed The Willows to reach 265 all out.
The target was always going to be a challenge for the visitors. Throughout the chase they showed some glimpses of real ability and as young players they will much better for the experience. A pleasing aspect of their innings was that no one threw their wicket away, and they did look to apply themselves. The bowling effort was consistent with the wickets shared around. James Kelly topped off a good day with 2/27 and a fine catch at slip. Two young left arm medium paced seamers in Jed Irvine and Will Bretherton bowled with accuracy.
The Waimea College team was supported by a large number of family and friends which was wonderful and epitomises The Willows values. The team was a credit to their School, families and themselves. Thanks also to team coaches Robbie Flowers and Jay Irving for developing an excellent group of players.
The Waimea team were delighted to have two of New Zealand’s greatest ever cricketers, John Wright and Sir Richard Hadlee speak over the lunch break. They were able to share their vast experience and knowledge of the game; a memory that will last for years to come.
