'SHINE'

"You must win David, you must win ........."

David Helfgott’s father’s simple and consistent objective for his son paled into insignificance to·the letter I received from our Club President three days prior to our match with the Flaxton Wanderers.

Four games played at the “The Willows” and no home victories!

"We must win, must win” was the message. Although some may disagree, I believe I remained relatively normal.

Chasing 166, at 23 for 3 we were in trouble, but with a typical B.G.Hadlee innings containing well run singles and classical strokes through the field combined with a well-paced innings from Paul McCarthy, which also contained many excellent and well selected strokes, a comfortable victory was achieved.

Earlier in the day the Flaxton Wanderers, led by Chris Heslop, Henderson and Gardner did well to reach 166 against miserly spin bowling from Andrew Nuttall and very exciting wrist spinners from Marcel McKenzie – very impressive Marcel, well done! As usual for the Willows ground, the game was played in the best traditions of cricket with recently planted ornamental lime trees showing off in the early summer weather.
