The Willows
won by 3 wickets
On a cold day the Willows team fielded first with the bowlers making a slow start. Wellington took a little time to recover from their hosts’ hospitality the previous night and after being 150 after 20 overs reached 260 with some great batting.
The Willows, considering the average age on the day was 50+, applied themselves well to the task in attempting to equal or overtake what seemed to be a rather daunting total.
All contributed and with five runs to get off the last two balls Wal Scott hooked a bouncer for four and then followed a brief discussion between himself and Cardiologist Hamid Ikram (batting at the other end) which we can only assume concerned the removal of Wal’s tonsils the following day. When the last ball was bowled Wal slashed it to mid-off where three Wellington fielders converged to retrieve the ball and all were knocked over by Wal who completed the vital run flat on his back to give the Willows a deserved victory.
The rope and noose kept on hand for all losing captains was removed from the gallows within the scorebox and a lovely evening was had by all who were able to stay.
