won by 7 wickets

On arrival at the ground all players were once again blessed with magnificent weather and a superbly presented ground. The ‘earlier arriving’ Willows players were able to witness an excellent, well drilled warm up undertaken by the Wellington College players under the guidance of their professional coach, Mr Christie van Dyke. Mr van Dyke displayed a most committed approach and the Wellington players carried this over in the middle.

Wellington College won the toss and elected to bat first and made steady progress through sound batting. Their innings centred around a 94 run partnership between J Newdick (44) and H Templeton (55 not out). Templeton was joined late in the innings by J Khan and between them they scored 33 for the sixth wicket, Khan finishing on 24 not out. The Willows bowlers all performed creditably with nine people seen at the bowling crease, five of whom gained wickets.

The Willows batting was dominated by Carl Anderson (65) and lain Robertson (100 retired) who both batted superbly during their partnership of 142. While the Wellington bowlers were very well supported by some superb fielding, they could not hold off the onslaught from Carl, lain and Robert Miller later in the innings. All three played shots around the wicket and of particular note were some well executed cover drives. The Willows were able to overtake the Wellington College total of 216 in the 39th over.

Mr Roger Moses, Headmaster of Wellington College, attended the day’s proceedings and the Willows players were pleased to meet him, noting the interest he took in the boys cricket and the respect shown to him by his players. We will look forward to further games with Wellington College as a high standard has been set.
