A magnificent Loburn day combined with a good wicket and a fast outfield was the setting for the inaugural Waitaki Boys’ High School match.

The Willows was graced by the presence of three Waitaki Old Boys, namely Mike Satterthwaite, David Fox and yours truly, as well as Gerald Austin who was Match Manager.

Paul McEwan, Darin Cusack and Mark Weeds batted superbly for the Willows. Darin looked odds on to score a century before succumbing to a pulled muscle and collapsing at the crease! The Waitaki Boys’ bowlers and fieldsmen found the going tough but to their credit persevered.

Chasing a formidable target the Willows bowling led by the evergreen Titch McGuire, parsimonious Andrew Nuttall and the wily David Fox ensured the Willows total was never seriously challenged.

The Waitaki players after the match were treated to some valuable coaching tips from Paul McEwan and Andrew Nuttall.

It was a great day’s cricket. Special mention must be made for the support of the Rector of Waitaki Boys’, Dr Paul Baker, and parents who made the trip north to watch the game.
