The second Anzac encounter did not live up to all the hype and prematch banter. The Crusaders were simply too good and in winning a one-sided match, squared the two match series. Honours shared.
Included in their tour party was the top umpire, Darrell Holt, who has officiated at ODI level. The day was a pleasant one for him. Not only did he enjoy meeting and standing with our own personable Trevor Barber, but he reckoned he had the pick of the bowlers operate from his end. He had warm praise for Andrew Nuttall, Troels Nielsen and Serge Moussi – the latter knocked the stuffing out of the Willows top order with four wickets.
The best batting of the day came from the young 16 and 17 year olds invited to tour with the Crusaders. This overseas experience can only help them in their cricket development. In our side the middle order of Hamish Hudson, Nuttall and Barry Townrow stood out with the bat, but we were never going to get to the target.
Thanks to Swan Richards for bringing the side across from Victoria. The week has produced some good cricket, staged at pleasant venues in beautiful weather. It also forged new friendships and accentuated how easily cricket lovers can become good mates.
