Mike Dormer’s threat as to the fate of the first losing captain hung like the Sword of Damocles over the last hour of this match. Battling dull light and a keen attack, Hamid Ikram and Andrew Nuttall took us from 150 for 8 to levelling the scores at 162 before Andrew, rather recklessly, thought John Thomson, who had smoked ten cigarettes in five minutes, should be given an opportunity. Anti-climactically, a bye next ball gave us an exciting victory with two balls to spare.

Earlier, the pace and fire of Hamid Ikram, who in this game was obviously experimenting with his slower ball every delivery, and the guile of Andrew Nuttall restricted School to 162. Despite good early batting by Jeremy Bull, John Mitchell and Marcel McKenzie, the regular loss of wickets saw us “pace” our way through to a narrow victory.
