St Andrew’s won the toss and elected to bat. An opening stand by A. Keoghan andW.Bell backed up their decision to bat and it was fairly obvious to theWillows players that not only was it hot, but it was going to be a long 50 overs. From 90/1 theWillows fought back to have the boys at 133/5 and finally all out for 187.
Some very tidy bowling by Andrew Nuttall, 9 overs, 5 maidens, 5 wickets for 8 runs slowed proceedings and the College team self-destructed very quickly.
TheWillows’ turn to bat with a reasonably modest 187 in 50 overs to chase. Both openers soon into their stride – Matthew Lancaster with 25 and Mark Savill with a well compiled 54 had us running along nicely. However, 121/2 soon became 154/6 and the Willows were in danger of facing the breeze with a round to go. lt was left to Jeremy lnnes to provide the backbone of the middle order with 55 from 62 balls, and to Adrian McFedries to provide the fireworks in the last over. After two swings and two misses, Adrian managed to avoid being caught from the last ball of the innings and run the three required for a win by two wickets.
This was a good work out for St Andrew’s leading into their interschool game. Thank you to the Willows team for their efforts and to all involved o n the day.
