The Willows 157

Woodbank Wanderers 158/4

P D'Auvergne 76 ret, M Coster 32*

The Willows
lost by 6 wickets

The fixture was played in beautiful weather with a lush green outfield after recent rain. The Willows batted first and laboured to reach 157. Robin Frahm top scored with a useful 22 and he and Sam Fulton (20) produced a partnership of 31. Apart from a quick 20 from Paul Rutledge, the remainder failed to make a worthwhile contribution.

The Wanderers’ attack was steady throughout with 8 bowlers used, all of whom took one wicket.

Phi! D'Auvergne proceeded to display some of the ability which earned him selection for Canterbury in the 1980s as he compiled 76 (retired). Mark Coster was 32 not out at the close, and Woodbank had an easy victory by six wickets.

The Willows attack was led by former Central Districts and Canterbury representative Denis Aberhart, and John Mitchell conceded only 24 from his 10 overs.

It was an enjoyable day for all concerned, especially for the Wanderers piayers who recorded their first victory over the Willows. This was soon brought to the attention of Don Wylie, Hawkswood Wanderers captain, who is a regular victor at Loburn!
