The first Willows match of the new season promised much, and the South Canterbury XI, led in their first game at Loburn by Murray Parker, contained an interesting blend of youthful ability and experience.

South Canterbury made a steady start despite the slowish pitch and outfield, and Matthew Hudson’s tight line and length. Cumming, who looks a player of the future, displayed patience and promise in compiling 59.

The experienced pair of Parker and Warren Eddington, a former Canterbury representative, had a valuable partnership of over 40. The tussle between this pair and Andrew Nuttall was absorbing, and rekindled memories of past Town v Country matches.

Stephen Flanagan showed signs of developing into a fine all rounder. He produced the bowling highlight for the Willows with3-25 from 10 overs. The remainder of the wickets were shared around.

Wade Burrell’s wicket-keeping was impressive, and included a smart leg side stumping off Marcel McKenzie. Mark Savill and Michael Hastings were reliable both in the field and with the ball.

Hudson (45) and Flanagan (48) set the foundation for a competitive run chase in the afternoon. Derek and Wade Burrell also contributed well and their composed partnership brought the Willows within winning distance.

Despite some quick ‘wickets and superb bowling and fielding, Wade Burrell was able to see his side through to a three wicket victory. Chris Leonard showed his all round experience in capturing 4 for 20 from 10 avers, an effort that kept South Canterbury in the match until the end.
