The Willows
lost by 1 run

The Willows were sent into bat on another fine sunny day at the Willows ground. The Willows team combined to post a competitive 246/8 off 50 avers. The Willows lost regular wickets at the start of their innings, and were in trouble at 106/6 after 25 overs. However a fine partnership of 1 19 between A Nathu and A Fullerton-Smith got the Willows batting back on track, and on the way to setting a competitive score. A Nathu was particular strong on the front foot, and drove the ball beautifully through the off side. At the end of the innings, A Nathu was left 81 not out. Wickets were shared amongst all the bowlers who bowled good lines on a slow wicket. The pick of the bowlers was Brian Hutchinson who had figures of 2/34 off nine overs.

This left the Medbury Headmaster’s XI a challenging run chase. The game became very interesting at the end, with the Willows needing 1 wicket to win, and Medbury needing 2 runs. Medbury ended up making the target nine wickets down. For the Willows, Andrew Nuttall bowled with great control and spin with the new ball, and took the first 3 wickets to fall. The Willows fielding started off really well with two excellent catches taken. One was by a diving Sam Davis at mid-on, and the other was by. Hamish Pavey, who took a brilliant one handed catch at mid-wicket. However a fine century partnership between P McEwan and M Satterthwaite put Medbury back into the game after a slow start. The highlight of their innings was Paul McEwan who scored another century. He hit the ball hard and found the boundary on numerous occasions. However in controversial circumstances he batted on until the end of the over once he had reached his century. Once Paul McEwan had retired, the game turned on its head with Medbury losing 3 quick wickets. This left number 11 Bob Masefield the task of hitting the winning runs. They ended up reaching the target with 3 avers to spare with the game finishing with a wide being bowled.
