The Willows
won by 147 runs

The Willows produced a solid all-round performance to defeat Southland BHS after posting a formidable first-innings total and then dismantling the chase with some disciplined bowling. The Willows batted first and built their innings steadily through contributions across the order. The top and middle order rotated strike well and punished loose deliveries, allowing momentum to build through the middle overs keeping wickets in hand. Some big partnerships between P. Russell who went on and scored a fine 100 and M.Robinson who flicked off his legs beautifully for a fast paced half century kept the scoreboard moving and ensured there were no major collapses. Old boy Andrew Leckie also a notable mention who made a very sensible and well played 66 and put on a nice partnership with P.Russell also. By the close of their innings, The Willows had accumulated 296 runs, setting Southland BHS a demanding target. Despite moments of resistance from the Southland BHS bowlers, with wickets shared among the attack as well as a handy direct hit run out, The Willows’ depth and application ensured a challenging score was on the board. Chasing 297, Southland BHS struggled to gain early traction against a tight Willows bowling unit. Opening the bowling was UK Arundel Scholar Ollie Moore who bowled tight lines with pace and at the other end the other Englishman, Olly Birkett from Matfen CC bowling accurate swinging seamers making the Southland batters work hard for their runs. Regular breakthroughs prevented partnerships from forming, and the pressure created by accurate lines and a lifting required run rate tilted the match in the Willows favor. While a few Southland batters showed fight, wickets continued to fall at key moments. Southland were eventually dismissed for 149, however it was good to see them bat out 45 overs and value their wickets. Great to have 4 players from the UK play for The Willows in this match. Toby and Olly from Sussex who are part of the reciprocal Dormer-Mellusih scholarship with Arundel Castle Cricket Foundation and BACA. Also Toby and Ollie from Newcastle with the link being Toby’s dad, Ian Pilkington a veteran of Matfen CC who would’ve played with over 20 years worth of Willows Scholars from the early 2000’s onwards. Also a massive shout out to Mason Robinson for his commitment driving back and forth on the same day from his home in Nelson to make the match. As always a great day out at The Willows and thank you to all involved making it an enjoyable day.
